Safety Tips When Decorating Your Home at Christmas

Safety Considerations for Christmas

Decorating your home during the holidays is a lot of fun but it is important to be safe too. There are many ways you can decorate and still be safe with the decorating. The factors to keep in mind include the lights you use, how you hang them, how many you use, and more. The last thing you would ever want is a fire or to be injured from your decorating efforts.

When you decorate for Christmas lights are usually the most important for most people. Many people like to overload their tree with lights and decorate the outside of their home too. Some people think that the brightest they can get it is better. It is important to remember that some lights burn hotter than others. For example, indoor lights are meant for indoor use and outdoor lights are meant for outdoor use. When you buy lights it will be indicated on the package what use the lights are designed for. You should never run indoor lights outside or vice versa. This will create an immediate hazard that can be avoided.

Lighting up Christmas trees is a lot of fun and most people can’t wait to decorate the tree. You should be careful about how many lights you put on the tree. Some lights burn hotter than others and if your tree is real it can get dry and become a fire hazard. You might consider artificial Christmas trees to avoid this hazard. Another thing to think about is that even though you like a brilliantly lit tree it is not a good idea to run more than two strands of lights on the same link. Many people create their own fire hazard by stringing together many strands of lights to have the brightest tree they can. Don’t do this because it can be dangerous.

When you are outside decorating it is for your safety to be careful about how you hang lights. If your ladder doesn’t reach quite high enough don’t try and stretch to reach your target. You might just have to pass on the lighted palm trees this year unless you can get a tall enough ladder. The last thing you want to do is fall and break a bone or injure yourself even worse. Also take care when you fix strings of lights around your house. Even though a staple gun gives you a free hand and makes it easy to affix the lights to the house, you could damage the wire by hitting it with a staple. This too can create a fire hazard.

It is important to be safe during the Christmas season and try to take precautions whenever you can during the decorating of your home. Be careful with the types of lights you use for decorations and how you string them together. Also be careful with how you are putting them on the outside of your home. If you cannot reach your target, don’t risk it. It is much better to be safe than sorry.
